Is Creativity Somehow Related with Meditation?

Krishna with Hollow Flute
Osho, a modern mystic from India, says objective art is created by a person who has reached his or her peak and creates from a higher level of being. Subjective art according to Osho is “pouring your subjectivity onto the canvas, your dreams, your imaginations, your fantasies. It is a projection of your psychology.” Whatever there is at the inside, in subjective art it is brought out and produced onto the canvas. It helps you to clean yourself from the inside out and makes you feel healthier. Nothing wrong with that except when according to Osho you show off your art work to others. Others may become nauseous and start feeling sick simply because you create from a place of chaos whereas objective art is created from a silent being.
Possibility for Creativity
Then, on the contrary, the creator of objective art has nothing to throw out because as Osho says “he is utterly empty, absolutely clean. Out of this silence, out of this emptiness arises love, compassion. And out of this silence arises a possibility for creativity. This silence, this love, this compassion – these are the qualities of meditation.”
“Objective art is meditative art, subjective art is mind art.” – Osho
Meditation takes you to your center, to your core, the heart of Existence itself. You will be creating from a place of no-mind, a state beyond thought. “A tremendous luminous experience of ecstasy that is beyond words.” which enlightened masters call bliss. Bliss is something we all are seeking knowingly or unknowingly. This ananda or bliss can be found only deep within yourself unearthed through meditation. Stretch, meditate and reach a higher level of your being to reach your peak potential to create objective art.
Sculptors Made by Meditators
Osho tells us about statues in India which have been made by meditators in such a way, in such a proportion, that just sitting silently and meditating upon, that just looking at the statue like Buddha or Mahavira, the figure, the proportion, the beauty, you will experience a strange feeling that Western sculptures cannot give you. He goes on saying that Western sculptures are made that something creates sexuality in you. They hit your sexual center and do not lift you up. Whereas in the East a sculptor or painter, any artist, before carving or painting, first learns meditation.
“Meditation is absolute necessity for any art; then the art will be objective.” – Osho
How Objective Art is Created
Meditation makes you empty, dissolves your samskaras, engraved memories. Objective art comes from this emptiness of your heart. Lord Krishna holds a flute in his hands symbolically saying become a flute, a hollow bamboo, so that the universe sings through you. As a hollow flute you don’t create any hindrance, you simply allow the universe to flow through you. As Osho says, “With you being in a let-go and allowing the universe to flow through you, objective art is created. There is not much objective art in the world, because before objective art can be created, you have to become a hollow bamboo – - and you are so solid, your ego is so stubborn. Before creating objective art, you have to be so humble, almost nobody. In your absence (no ego) there comes a great universal flood. That flood can become poetry, a painting, music, a dance, a sculpture. Thousands of dimensions are available, you just allow it.”

A beautiful post. I can fully identify with what you say about meditation and art. My art is music (I play piano) and after meditation, my mindfulness continues whilst I am playing. Also since meditating, I notice how I feel more aware of paintings and pictures when looking at them whereas before meditating (way back in my youth), I just didn’t really see them. Once in my early days of meditation practice, after a day of meditation with a group, I really saw a tree standing in the gardens outside. It was a very profound experience of a tree that I was seeing with something that transcended my five senses. I may have stopped sitting, but I got the feeling that I was still meditating..
hi Derek, thank you for sharing your beautiful experience. the seeing happens when your spiritual eye starts opening, visions happen. keep on meditating, the final reward of your spiritual practice will surely come soon…!
thanks for reconnecting…
