Why We Celebrate Diwali: The Festival of Light

Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is one of the most beloved celebrations in Sanātana Dharma. Beyond its outer festivities, Diwali invites us to remember the Light within and allow it to shine more fully in our lives.

The Meaning of Diwali

The word Diwali comes from the Sanskrit Dīpāvali, meaning a row or series of lights. Across India and around the world, homes and temples are illuminated with small oil lamps called diyas.

Diwali is celebrated in different ways and carries different meanings throughout the many traditions of Sanātana Dharma. Among its themes are the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil.

At a deeper level, the Festival of Light can also be understood as an invitation to turn inward.

What is the Light we are celebrating?

It is not merely the flame of a lamp or the brightness of fireworks. It is the Light of consciousness within us—the deeper presence that remains beneath our thoughts, emotions, conditioning, fears, and limitations.

Lakshmi and the Light of Abundance

For many devotees, Diwali is especially associated with Lakshmi Devi, the goddess of abundance, prosperity, beauty, and auspiciousness.

Lakshmi is traditionally depicted seated upon a lotus, symbolizing purity and the unfolding of spiritual beauty. Her presence reminds us that true abundance is more than material wealth.

There is also an inner wealth that cannot be measured: love, gratitude, generosity, wisdom, peace, and the recognition of our own Divine nature.

Lighting the Diyas

Before Diwali, homes are traditionally cleaned and prepared. Fresh clothing may be worn, diyas are placed throughout the home, prayers are offered, and families gather to celebrate.

The outer cleaning can become an inner reflection.

What are we ready to release?

What old patterns, fears, beliefs, resentments, or unfinished experiences are ready to be brought into the Light?

Each diya can become a simple reminder: the Light is already here.

Celebrating the Light Within

Diwali is a joyful festival, filled with family, devotion, beautiful lamps, food, sweets, music, and celebration. Yet beneath these traditions is a profound spiritual message.

Darkness does not overcome light. When a single lamp is lit in a dark room, the darkness does not fight back. It simply disappears where the light is present.

Perhaps this is why Diwali continues to speak so deeply to us.

We are not creating the Light within ourselves.

We are awakening to it.

This Diwali, as you light a diya, take a moment to pause. Let the flame remind you of the Light within—the Light that has never truly been absent.

May the Light within you shine brightly, illuminating your life and touching the lives of those around you.

Happy Diwali!
